Newport Cliff Walk

A 7-mile hike along the ocean.

This is the Newport Cliff Walk and this is how we spent our morning in Rhode Island. The Cliff Walk is a National Recreation Trail in a National Historic District, making it a truly unique combination of the natural beauty of the shoreline and the architectural history of Newport’s gilded age.

The easy section at the beginning of the Cliff Walk

The beginning of The Walk is an easy paved public path, so we encountered many people (read: bus loads of elderly travelers) strolling along.  We made our way rather quickly through this section, and as we got farther along, we found the path far less crowded, much more to our liking, and we even got to do some rock scrambling.

While we didn’t see the Great Gatsby, we did enjoy getting some exercise and seeing how the other half lived.

  1. You guys are doing a great job with this web site. I sometimes think I am viewing a PBS site or watching the PBS/Travel channel. Great stuff but like my favorite movies……………need more action. You know, jump off a cliff or go bear hunting with a knife or swim with sharks. :)
